Reading Intervention
At Play on Words Speech Therapy, we are committed to not only supporting your child’s communication journey - but also creating more confident readers. We recognize the relationship between speech-language disorders and potential reading difficulties. We believe in early identification and intervention of reading difficulties and supporting a love for literacy from an early age!
As speech-language pathologists, we go beyond traditional tutoring sessions. Our advanced training and knowledge in both spoken and written language sets us apart from reading tutoring. We aim to set your child up for reading success, with skills that they will use across their lifespan.
Literacy Evaluations
Literacy evaluations offer a comprehensive profile of your child's spoken and written language skills. The evaluation process allows us to get a complete picture of each client's strengths and weaknesses and to develop an appropriate treatment plan.
Areas tested may include:
Receptive and expressive language
Phonological awareness
Reading comprehension
Narrative retell
Decoding skills
Reading fluency
If applicable, we will also review current IEPs and outside reports prior to the evaluation. We are not able to provide a dyslexia diagnosis at this time.
Literacy Intervention
Literacy intervention sessions include structured and multi-sensory experiences to help your child gain essential skills for reading, spelling, and writing. We incorporate principles from several evidence-based approaches, including Orton-Gillingham, that are backed by the science of reading. Sessions are tailored to your child’s unique needs, as determined by the evaluation.
We are able to support the following areas:
Phonological awareness
Decoding (reading)
Encoding (spelling)
Reading comprehension
Letter-sound awareness
Reading fluency
And more!
